West Ham must toughen up this summer in avoid regression in 2016-17

By Peter Thorne

There have been few people upset by West Ham's entry into the Europa League, following Manchester United's FA Cup final victory over Crystal Palace at Wembley. Just like last year, when the Hammers qualified for Europe via the Fair Play League, it might seem that that there has been a certain amount of slipping in through the side door. But the spot that opened up for the seventh-place team as a result of Louis van Gaal's last victory in charge of the Reds was no more than the Hammers deserved after a fine season.

Nevertheless, the manner of qualification should remind everyone connected to the club that there is a thin line between success and failure.

When Southampton pipped Slaven Bilic's men on the last day of the season to finish sixth, there was a sense that the Saints had somehow blindsided their east London rivals. The statistics tell a different story. While the Hammers' last day defeat against Stoke City was only their eighth in a bright and enthralling campaign, the 14 draws earned was only matched by mid-table Chelsea and Everton. It's a statistic that masks the real progress this season.

West Ham may have to thank both Manchester teams for the League and FA cup successes that allowed Bilic to lead the club into Europe from outside of the top five, but the Hammers can justifiably point to four wins and two draws against both of the North-west sides, deserving of the opportunity to open up in their new Stratford home with a Europa League qualifier. Hhowever, two draws against Norwich, one against Aston Villa and a defeat against Newcastle should remind everyone exactly why Southampton pipped the Hammers. It was as true this season as any other; the claret and blue can still frustrate as well as entertain.

During the close season and in preparation for the opening game at the new stadium, the club need to address two major issues. Firstly, Slaven Bilic needs to find a way to win without Dimitri Payet, and that's assuming a spell or two out through injury rather than a move that sees the Frenchman turning out for Barcelona or Real next season! Without the talismanic Frenchman, the Hammers struggle to convert chances.

Secondly, the notion opponents often have is that the Hammers are a soft touch, an ideal team to play when a win is vital, must be consigned to history. When beleaguered Newcastle boss Steve McClaren needed to get a victory at St. James's Park to save his job, the Hammers once again provided the grateful opposition. In a manner similar to the 2014-15 season, when a final day win against West Ham ensured Newcastle survived for another season, Geordie fans were more than happy (at the time, at least) that the opposition wasn't a side more difficult to pressurise.

West Ham has always been a club that seem to raise their game against more illustrious opponents, while failing to give supposedly inferior opposition more respect. It's something that a 65,000 crowd and increased revenue may solve, given the transfer targets will be more expansive, but only time will tell if that's really the case.

In the meantime, the Hammers need to remember that relying on opponents isn't really the best way to get a job done. West Ham have got lucky this season, results have been good enough to protect from further criticism and local sentiment about the Boleyn has carried the team on wings of emotion. That won't last beyond an inaugural season in Stratford, though. This season's lesson needs to be quickly learned if the club are to progress as they hope.

West Ham make offer for Toulouse striker Martin Braithwaite as Sunderland look to tempt Diafra Sakho to the Stadium of Light

West Ham have made two offers for the Dane with their latest at £3million
Sunderland ready to bid £10million for striker who fell out with Slaven Bilic

West Ham have made an offer for Toulouse striker Martin Braithwaite that could trigger Diafra Sakho's sale to Sunderland.

The 24-year-old Braithwaite was instrumental in keeping Toulouse up this season as he scored 12 goals despite mainly figuring on the wing.

Braithwaite, who has one year left on contract, was told by Toulouse's coach that he would be allowed to pursue his dream of playing in the Premier League should he help keep them up.

The Denmark international duly obliged scoring the crucial equaliser in their dramatic last game escape as they beat Angers 3-2 to stay up by one point.

West Ham have since made two offers with their latest at £3million. Braithwaite has been with family in his native Denmark but is returning this week to ask the Toulouse president to honour the club's promise and allow him to move to the Premier League.

His representative Mark McKay of ExcelFoot said: 'Martin has fulfilled his part of the promise he made to Toulouse and now wants to take his career to the next level in the Premier League. It is an exciting opportunity for him.'

Braithwaite's pending arrival will prompt a £10million offer from Sunderland for West Ham's Diafra Sakho.

Manager Sam Allardyce is keen to be re-united with the 26-year-old who had a fall-out with Slaven Bilic earlier this year after being dropped for the London derby against Arsenal.

Sakho was bought from Metz for £3.5million in 2014 and has proved a bargain with 19 goals in 49 appearances.

Selling a proven premier league goal scorer, albeit with issues, and bringing in Martin Braithwaite? Really not convinced by this.

Oh well, in Slav we trust.
